    Hiram’s Memory

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Work

    Objective:

    Students will determine and explore a major theme in the novel.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2

    Structure:

    By this point in the novel, students should be able to articulate that memory is an important theme. Hiram has an exceptional memory. His memory is put to use by the Quality, and there are hints that his memory may be important for other things.

    Lead students through a discussion about memory in The Water Dancer using some or all of the following questions:

    · How has Hiram used his memory so far?

    · What clues has the narrator given that Hiram’s memory is more important than we know?
