    As we return to Lady Juliet's interview in Part Four, the narrator repeatedly draws attention to her love of gin. Why does this detail receive such attention? What does that suggest about the scenes related through her narration? Does it make her more or less trustworthy?

    Although they will likely find her less trustworthy because of her alcoholism, most students will also understand Juliet's drinking to be a consequence of the traumatic events described in this section. Some will see this as just a coping mechanism, but they should also see that the novel suggests such extreme responses are the only normal reaction to the horrors of war, even away from the front.
