A father is expected to be a person who provides direction for the family. For instance, Kevin is supposed to look up to his father as a role model and source of inspiration. Ironically, Judd is a drunkard and an abusive parent. Consequently, Kevin finds himself in an awkward and complex situation, interfering with his overall growth as a kid.

Mary knows that her husband is abusive and threatens the growth of Kevin. She does her best to protect Kevin. Ironically, her efforts are useless because Judd's obsession with abuse overpowers her.

The narrative is set in Lockchartville. However, the reader is astonished to learn that people in the village are categorized into two classes, the rich and the poor. The rich were the few well-established farmers, while the poor were the majority working as casual laborers. Kevin and his family were categorized as poor.
