Máel Dúin
Máel Dúin is the main character in the story. He is the son of a great king who must embark on a dangerous quest to avenge his father. Máel Dúin is in the beginning a child, someone who does not know what he wants from life. From that point on, Máel Dúin became a true man, a true leader capable of wonderful things. At the end Máel Dúin reaches a level of maturity which allows him to give up on his hatred and forgive those who have wronged him and his family.
The nun
The nun is Máel Dúin's biological mother. The nun served in a monastery which was one day visited by Ailill Ochair Aghra. The nun was described as being an extremely beautiful woman and this attracted the attention of the King. The nun was raped by the king and she got pregnant. The nun gave up the child but she helped the queen raise him and guide him. The nun is described as being an extremely kind woman, someone who did not blamed the king for his actions but rather instilled in her son a great respect and love for him.
Ailill Ochair Aghra
Ailill Ochair Aghra is a character who appears only briefly but who has a great role in the story. He is a king and the father of the protagonist in the story. He is killed in the beginning of the story while visiting a church. He is described as being a just king and he is not criticized even though he raped a nun. Ailill Ochair Aghra is loved both by his family and by his subjects and his death is seen as a great tragedy in the story.
The queen
The Queen is an unnamed character in the story. She is Ailill Ochair Aghra' wife and the main character's stepmother. She is seen as a kind woman who wants the best for her son. She is also described as being extremely supportive and kind and because of this she is portrayed as being almost a Saint.
