“The Unteachables” is a middle grade novel set in a school, following a class of students that are deemed unteachable delinquents and slow in learning. The author of the book started writing very young, and his books are mostly dedicated to young readers, with his titles often appearing on bestsellers lists.
It kicks off with the character of Kiana, a transfer-student from California whose stepmother fails to register her into the school, and she involuntarily enters the classroom 117, the classroom of the unteachable students and starts attending classes with them. The class gets a new teacher, Mr. Kermit, who is an unenthusiastic middle-aged teacher who can’t wait for his retirement to come.
The novel shows how open-mindedness and understanding is important for mending bridges, giving hope and inspiring positive change. It explores the themes of school life, grudges of the past and the importance of teaching.
