American author Anthony Marra's collection of short stories entitled The Tsar of Love and Techno (2015) tells the stories of a wide array of diverse characters - all of whom live in Russia in times periods ranging from 1937 to the Present Day. Also, the book is divided into three sections: side A, side B, and intermission.
One story in the book follows a censor who lives in 1930s Soviet Russia. The story follows the man as he attempted to navigate his job and the oppressive Soviet state which he lives in.
When it was released, The Tsar of Love and Techno received almost universally positive reviews. Kirkus Reviews, for example, opined that the book is "A powerful and melancholy vision of a nation with long memories and relentless turmoil." Publisher's Weekly also liked the book, writing that "Marra portrays a society built on betrayal, pollution, lies, and bullying, where art, music, fantasy, even survival, can represent quiet acts of rebellion. As in his acclaimed novel, Marra finds in Chechnya an inspiration his for his uniquely funny, tragic, bizarre, and memorable fiction."
