The Trial of an Ox for Killing a Man Irony

The Trial of an Ox for Killing a Man Irony

Irony of the verdict

The animal court decides that the Ox has committed murder; however, it also decides that the cruelty of the human warrants his death. Therefore, the Ox is found guilty but also earns his freedom.

Irony of moral

Although this court trial is concerned with the murder of a human, the moral of the court is ultimately about animal abuse. As such, the court is held about abuse to humans, but ironically becomes about abuse to animals.

Irony of the cockerel

The character of the cockerel, who usually starts the day, ironically ends the court proceedings in this story: "Upon which the cock clapped his wings, and crowed applause to the verdict".
