The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada Irony

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada Irony

Take Me Home

Melquiades asks Pete to take his body home to Jiminez if he dies. Pete tells him it won't happen because he'll be long dead before Mel dies, he's older. The irony is that Melquiades is shot and killed, and Pete must keep his promise.

Knowing

The Sheriff, Belmont knows that the man who killed Melquiades is Norton. Ironically he doesn't do anything to bring Norton in. He let's the murder go because Melquiades was undocumented.

Not Paying Attention

Norton believes that he is being shot at in an open field so he returns fire, killing Melquiades. The irony is that because Norton wasn't paying attention to what was in front of him (he was buried in his magazine), he misinterprets what's happened and kills a man.

Love

Pete believes that Rachel is in love with him. Ironically she has a husband who she cheats on with Pete, and another lover, Belmont that she cheats on Pete with. While she is with him she makes him feel special and like he is the only one, but the truth is she does not have her eyes set on just one man. She has her mind set on her definition of living free and that means she is not a one man woman.

Coyote

Two men decide to kill a coyote to find out what it's eaten on their hunting trip. The irony is that they find that the coyote was eating a man, Melquiades. In their own self interest of killing something wild and finding out if the coyote took their pray they discover something far worse then they could have ever imagined.
