Coming of Age
The majority of the characters in the novel are first introduced as teenagers who do not know what they want in life. For instance, Russell and Charlie are not interested in school because they want to travel to North Dakota to search for job opportunities. However, as time moves, Charlie changes his mind and starts concentrating on his studies. Tansy also convinces Russell to focus on his studies until he finishes university. Russell agrees to finish his studies. At the novel's end, the characters are in different professions after graduating from university. Therefore, the narrative follows the characters from their young age until they mature.
The theme of Loss
The death of Mrs. Myrt is a loss to the local community of Indiana. Mrs. Myrt's contribution to the education sector is immense because she ensures all students attend school. School is compulsory for all children, but most parents do not take the government directive seriously. Consequently, if a child refuses to go to school, the parent does not bother because it is not a big issue. For instance, the 15-year-old Russell hates school because he wants to travel to North Dakota to start working. However, Mrs. Myrt does not entertain children like Russell because she ensures they all attend school without fail. The death of Mrs. Myrt creates a big gap because the school risks closure if no other teacher volunteers to replace her. The school board regrets losing Mrs. Myrt and looks forward to finding her replacement.
Strength of mind
Strength of mind is prevalent throughout the novel. Tansy is a young girl who has not finished high school, but has big dreams. When Mrs. Myrt dies, Tansy asks the board to consider her application as the new teacher. Tansy is still a high school student, but she convinces the school board that she is up to the task. Tansy's determination and willpower convinces the school board that she is the best person to replace the late Mrs. Myrt as the new teacher. When Tansy gets the opportunity to teach, she does her best and ensures 100% school enrolment. In addition, the school performs exceptionally well, and all the students love her. The school board appreciates Tansy's work by giving her the certificate of qualification and encourages her to pursue her education to increase her expertise.
