The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness Background

Published in 1969, The Sunflower is a memoir written by Austrian Holocaust survivor Simon Wiesenthal. The book poses the complex ethical dilemma faced by Wisenthal as he remained at a concentration camp. One day, he is called to the hospital by a nurse, as a Nazi soldier has summoned him. The soldier tells Wiesenthal his life story, and asked him for forgiveness for all of the things he had done during the war and the Holocaust. Wiesenthal does not forgive him, and the soldier dies the next day.

Born in 1908, Simon Wiesenthal was a former Holocaust survivor and Nazi Hunter. Because of his horrible experience, he dedicated his life to let people know what really happened, and tried to hunt down those who alleged to be former Nazi's and were proud of it. Wiesenthal was the author of several memoirs, and passed away in 2005.
