    Objective:

    Students will be able to identify and analyze the use of symbolism and figurative language in a text.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RL.11-12. 4

    Structure:

    Review with students the different types of figurative language. Ask them to make a list, and have them offer defintions.

    Then, create the following chart on the board (students may copy it into their notebooks). Have students reread Chapter 6 from the beginning, noting descriptions of the sun and the sea, if figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification) is used, and the effect (if any) the symbols have on Meursault at that point in the...
