Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1880, Hellen Keller would go on to lead an extraordinary life despite becoming deaf, blind and mute as the result of an illness she suffered early in her life. Keller was born with all of her senses, and spoke and walked by her first birthday. It is believed by some that scarlet fever or meningitis may account for her lost sight and hearing, which occurred by the age of two. Before the arrival of more formal teachers and a formal education, she managed to communicate with her family friend, Martha Washington.
