Heker is the author of five short story collections and two novels. All of her short stories are gathered into the 1994 collection Los bordes de lo real.
Heker's writing belongs to the literary tradition of magic realism, which also includes the authors Jose Saramago, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Jorge Amado, and Julio Cortázar.
