Hadley Sullivan is a seventeen-year-old girl from New York City. Her father is a college professor who went to Oxford and ended up abandoning his family for another woman. Hadley grows up resenting her father. It takes a while for her to come to terms with his betrayal. In an effort to reconcile, Hadley promises to attend her father's wedding.
Arriving late to the airport, she misses her flight. While waiting for another flight, Hadley meets a handsome British boy named Oliver. He is a Yale University student who is also travelling to London for another wedding. Together, they catch a flight to London and spend the entire time getting to know each other. Upon arrival, they lose track of each other. It is evident that they've fallen in love at their first encounter.
Love and matrimonial commitments are at the forefront of this story. Hadley falls in love at first sight, just like her father did, which reconciles some of the resentment she held towards him. However, her father's action to abandon his family cannot be justified.
