The Spider

Howitt's most well-known poem "The Spider and the Fly" is about a spider who persuades a fly to enter its home. The spider uses manipulation and flattery in order to tempt the fly, ultimately leading to the death of the fly.

The Fly

The fly is used in "The Spider and the Fly" to warn readers against being tempted by flattery and manipulation. The fly at first rejects the spider's advances but is later drawn in by flattery.

The Coot

Howitt's poem "The Coot" is about a "bold, adventurous Coot," who survives the many obstacles it faces. Howitt overall suggests that the Coot is an animal to be respected.
