Irony of Relationships
There is an irony of relationships in the novel. Antonio's relationship with Aura is ironical because she was Antonio's student and he got indulge in physical relationship with her. Instead of refusing her, he accepts her offer by giving her high grades. Antonio doesn't take the responsibility of this relationship and spends his free time in bars. After knowing about his child, he gives away his relationship with Aura. After getting indulge in relationships with other girls, he builds a physical relationship with his friend's daughter. Maya did not have any emotional attachment with Antonio but still they were spending time with each other. Ricardo and Antonio's relationship is also ironical because they met at a bar and Ricardo did not tell him anything about himself. Their acquaintance lead Antonio close to death and then he suffered from post traumatic syndrome.
Irony of Aura
Aura gets involved in a relationship with Antonio just because she wanted to get higher grades from her teacher. The physical relationship between a teacher and a student is derogatory because it damages the sanctity of this relation. She offers her body in return of better grades. Furthermore, they do not follow this acquaintance and break off the tie hen Antonio suffers from trauma. The sight of death of Ricardo disturbs him mentally and he could not carry on this intimacy and moves on towards Maya after spending time with other girls.
Irony of Ricardo
Ricardo's death is also ironical because he was not threatened by law for his drug dealing. He was murdered by cartel in the bar while he was with Antonio. Ricardo doesn't tell Antonio about his secrets despite of forming a strong bond with him. Ricardo spend twenty years in prison but still he was violently murdered. It is ironical that his secret is revealed by his daughter. The secrets which were concealed by Ricardo regarding drug dealings or the cartels were unveiled by Maya after his death. Although he planned to mend his ways but he could not get enough time to serve the society.
