The Social Network Imagery

Solitary Jog (Visual Imagery)

After Erica breaks up with Mark at the beginning of the film, the opening credits roll over shots of Mark jogging across the Harvard campus back to his dorm. Although Mark passes many people his age, at no point during the jog does he encounter anyone who seems to know him. Even when he returns to his room and his roommates come back, Mark barely converses, preferring to stare at his computer screen and share his thoughts on his Livejournal blog. The visual imagery of Mark's lonely run conveys Mark's social isolation among his peers.

Rowing Practice (Visual Imagery)

When Divya learns of The Facebook's growing profile on campus, he finds the Winklevoss Twins training at the indoor rowing facility. The scene is lit in cool blues, grays, and greens, lending the facility a villainous quality. The ambient coolness of the scene in combination with the tall, muscular twins pulling on the oars gives an impression of their strength and capacity to do harm to Mark.

Mark's Moan (Auditory Imagery)

After meeting Christy and her friend at Bill Gates's speaking event, Eduardo and Mark go out to a bar with the women. They all end up in the bathroom, where Christy and Eduardo make out aggressively. Eduardo is surprised to hear Mark moaning in breathless pleasure in the neighboring stall. In this example of auditory imagery, the director invites the viewer to imagine the sex act Mark is engaged in without having to show it.

Refresh (Visual Imagery)

In the film's final shots, Mark sits before his laptop refreshing his Facebook page. He hits refresh so often because he is impatient to know whether Erica Albright has accepted his friend request, even though he only sent it moments earlier. The visual image of Mark refreshing the page conveys his impatience and insecurity as he longs for her acceptance—something he has craved ever since she rejected him in the film's first scene.
