The Sixth Extinction

The Sixth Extinction Analysis

Throughout the history of the world, various species have been wiped out. In her book, The Sixth Extinction, Elizabeth Kolbert describes how various species are at risk of extinction. Kolbert believes that the world is staring at the risk of sixth extinction being caused by humans. Indeed, the author globe-trots to study and evaluate various species that have been wiped out or are on the verge of extinction. In her journey to Panama, she notices that the golden frogs have reduced to a few numbers. During the early years, humans did not realize that some species were exterminated.

Kolbert believes that every time there is a natural extinction going on virtually. However, no one except scientists understands its occurrence. This kind of extinction is referred to as background extinction. As well, Kolbert points out that humans’ attempt to control the environment has led to the extinction or diminishing number of various species. For instance, the increase in temperatures and acidity has largely affected aquatic life. Deforestation has also forced some species to migrate from their habitat.

Nevertheless, scientists have been looking for ways to save endangered species from extinction. Human activities partly cause extinction. For example, Kolbert blames deforestation and poor breeding programs for nearly-extinct rhinos. Ultimately, Kolbert demonstrates how Neanderthals were wiped out. According to her, Neanderthals could not cope or compete with modern humans. From her point of view, humans have greatly contributed to the extinction of various species.
