The Shrinking of Treehorn Background

The Shrinking of Treehorn is a children’s book written by American writer Florence Parry Heide. It was first published in 1971 with illustrations made by Edward Gorey. The book was followed by two sequels, Treehorn's Treasure in 1981 and Treehorn's Wish in 1984.

The story follows Treehorn, a young boy who notices that he is shrinking with every passing day. He comes to this realization alone since he barely can touch the shelves that were previously reachable. Though his parents and teachers are hardly concerned about the phenomenon he is later sent to the principal office for shrinking. No reason is given behind this occurrence hence takes it upon himself to solve it. Treehorn finds a magical game in the cereal box that can reinstate his natural state and height. He eventually manages to gain his normal size again but begins turning green in the end.

In the book, the author highlights that the problems of children are usually ignored or not heard by adults. The story was adapted for film with Ron Howard as the director through his studio Imagine Entertainment. Netflix will release the film in November of 2023.
