In Chapter One, Carr makes an allusion to the supercomputer HAL from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. This allusion illustrates the efffects the internet may (has) change (changed) the way we think about and process information.
An allusion is an expression that is meant to bring something to mind, it is a casual reference that hints at the broader meaning.
