The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains was written by English author and essayist Nicholas Carr. Published in 2010, the book seems to expand upon the original ideas presented by Carr in his essay entitled, "Is Google Making Us Stupid?".
The Shallows introduces the point that, as we have a network readily available at our fingertips, we may no longer feel the need to think deeply about things, rather just quickly looking them up to find an answer. Throughout the years, conclusive research has been done to find that reading things online don't allow you to comprehend them as deeply as if your were reading an actual printed book.
Born in 1959, Nicholas Carr is a writer on the effects of technology, The Shallows being his most popular published work, and a finalist for a 2011 Pulitzer Prize. He has made speeches as numerous conventions on technological topics, including the dominance of some search engines and websites that seem to resemble a "plantation of knowledge". Carr has an M.A. in English and American literature and language from Harvard University.
