The Secret Lion Background

'The Secret Lion' is a well-known published text written by American author Alberto Alvaro Rios. It is narrated from the position of a mnemonic adult but with a child's eye and voice, which gives the story a good deal of humor and wit. Through this tale the viewer is presented with the nostalgic perceptions of the youthful and their eventual acceptance of maturation. Moreover this story evokes personal memories of a reader's adolescence and allows them to reflect upon these certain moments again.

The story follows young unnamed protagonist as he makes the traditional transition from childhood to adulthood. Altogether certain situations and occurrences chip away at all the twelve-year old knows to be true as maturity confronts and thus transforms him into a young man. Despite the hardships he faces a comforting resolution is reached.

Rios' narrative was well received and was even the recipient of the acclaimed Western States Book award for fiction. In turn, this work contributed to Rios' popularity and hence his election as chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
