How does Mary make Colin decide to be less rude to people?
Mary appeals to Colin’s pride. He doesn’t respond to the idea that Dr. Craven has suffered from his rudeness, but when Mary says that Dr. Craven wouldn’t dare to slap Colin because he was “such a poor thing.” He doesn’t like that, saying stubbornly that he isn’t going to be a poor thing anymore and won’t let people think he is. Then Mary says that getting his way all the time has made him strange, and Colin doesn’t like that either. He says he doesn’t want to be strange. He’s a proud boy and after some thought decides he’ll stop being strange by continuing to go to the garden.
