Ben Trotter
One of the main characters of the novel, Ben is a young man working as a musician. Writing romantic songs for money, he falls in love with the girl Cicely Boyd. Boyd attends an adjoining girls' school, the same one that Ben's brother goes to. Boyd is said to be the most beautiful girl at the school.
Philip Chase
Another one of the main characters in the novel, but not as important as Ben, Philip is Ben's best friend. He is into music like his friend, but not the same style. He tries to create a rock band with a rather odd name, but it is not a success.
Doug Anderson
Growing up in a confusing world, Doug does not seem to know the difference between right and wrong. Very opinionated and biased in everything that he does, Doug is an avid reader and writer. Doug attempts to convert the students at the school to Socialists.
Claire Newman
The younger sister of Miriam, Claire is the best friend of Ben. As a friend of Ben and his only female friend, Claire has a strong influence on him. She often declares how much she hates religion, especially Christianity, because it was forced onto her as a child by her abusive father.
