The Romance of Tristan Themes

The Romance of Tristan Themes

Love

The main and most prominent theme in the story is love. It is forbidden and unexpected, because Tristan and Iseult drank poisoned wine that was made for Iseult and King, but deep and true as far as the couple couldn’t hold their feelings inside and weren't afraid of being revealed. The author shows us how love change people and make them do crazy things. It can’t be hidden and forgotten; this love is passionate and mad. Nonetheless, this love is unhappy and tragic because it makes the main characters to die.

Treason

The only person who goes through most of the treasons is King Mark. He was betrayed by the closest people – Tristan and Iseult. Their love to each other broke king’s heart, and he couldn’t think that his loyal soldier and friend Tristan would lead away his future wife. The author shows us that life is full of many unexpected situations and they are not always pleasant unfortunately. Sometimes, even the dearest person can betray.

Royal life

The author breaks people’s expectations about the seemingly luxurious life of royalty. The story shows us that such life is often worse than life of ordinary people; it has specific and cruel rules and traditions. As an example, Iseult couldn’t choose whom to marry and Tristan was exiled because of his love for Iseult.
