Tomson Highway is perhaps the best-known Indigenous playwright in North America, but he is one of many Indigenous theater artists who have been creating theater for and about Indigenous cultures and people. The Centre for Indigenous Theatre is a non-profit theater institution and educational center in Toronto that has fostered the talents of many Indigenous theater-makers in Canada.
On their website, The Centre for Indigenous Theatre describes its origins: "In late 1974, the late James Buller founded Native Theatre School with the belief that with a viable Aboriginal school, Aboriginal actors, playwrights, and directors would have a respectful and supportive home for the community's creative explorations and exchanges. Buller's hope was that the four-week program would grow Aboriginal voices and the Aboriginal theatre community." Some graduates of the center include Gary Farmer, Graham Greene, Tina Louise Bomberry, Jennifer Podemski, George Leach, and Lucie Idlout. The faculty has included such artists as Tomson Highway, John Turner, Paul Thompson, Margo Cane, Columpa Bobb, and others.
