Tomson Highway was born in 1951. He lived a nomadic lifestyle in northern Manitoba until he was six, then attended a Catholic boarding school and a public high school in Winnipeg. His studies in classical piano led him to spend a year in London, England, after which he earned a bachelor of music honors and a bachelor of arts from the University of Western Ontario in London. Following graduation, he spent seven years as a social worker throughout Ontario and began writing plays at the age of 30.
