Evolution in a month (metaphor)
Ben rather quickly was transforming back step by step into different creatures that developed during the evolution which took millions of years. Such a speed is weird, and as Annie declares “Ben is shedding a million years a day”.
No callings (metaphor)
Ben’s friends were calling Annie all the time asking where he was, she answered he was sick and asked stop calling, and they did, as she says “the phone was silent” which metaphorically means nobody called and the phone was not buzzing.
Annie’s sea (metaphor)
When Ben metamorphosed into a sea turtle, Annie kept him in a pan filled with saltwater. She continued to “drip tears into the pan, a sea of me”. Annie is very sad because her loved is not with her anymore and this little pan filled with water and containing her lover becomes very important for her, seems like it means the world to her, it is her sea.
Drops instead of eyes (simile)
Annie kept the altered Ben him a baking pan and used to talk to him, but he seemed not to understand her but “stared with eyes like little droplets of tar”. Annie was really upset because of it.
