Landscape description

From the first pages of the novel we can notice beautiful landscapes of different places and towns. The little town of Verrières might be one of the prettiest in all Franche-Comté. Its white houses with their sharp-pointed roofs of red tile stretch down a hillside, every faint ripple in the long slope marked by thick clusters of chestnut trees”. Through this description reader can feel like he is in this town, like he walking on its streets, and it makes people to feel better the atmosphere of the novel.

Character description

Stendhal also perfectly describe every person of the novel. He opens his true face, hidden sides of a soul and honest thoughts. “She was a tall, well-made woman, who had been the local beauty, as people in these mountains put it. There was a distinct straightforwardness about her, and in the youthful spring of her walk: indeed, to the eyes of a Parisian such unspoiled charm, as innocent as it was lively, might even have seemed suggestive of a sweet sensuality. The reader can imagine his portrait of each character and like watch a movie while reading a book.

Feelings descriptions

In every situation that happens to the characters, the author skillfully describes the whole spectrum of emotions a person feels. “Generosity, nobility of soul, humanity, little by little appeared to her to exist nowhere but in this young ecclesiastic. It was only for him that she felt the sympathy, even the admiration, that virtue arouses in well-born souls.It provokes reader to feel frank emotions and share the feelings of characters.
