Uncle Sam is a fictional, folklore character, the protector of the American style of life. Robert Coover uses a satiric tone to describe Uncle Sam in order to laugh at the Cold War fears and hysteria.

The Phantom

The Phantom is the opponent of Uncle Sam, the embodiment of Communism, the son of Darkness. Of course, all these unpleasant characteristics are ascribed to the Phantom by Uncle Sam. In general, the Phantom is the satire on the Cold War hysteria.

Richard Nixon

Vice President Richard Nixon is one of the main characters of the story and the narrator. This fictional version could be described as a round character. He is ambitious, selfish, even cruel, but also a human, who has his fears, longings and hopes.

Pat Nixon

Pat Nixon is Vice President Richard Nixon’s wife.

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg play an important role in the story, for they are – according to almost every character in the novel – are representatives of the Darkness, criminals, who almost manage to sell the secret of the atomic bomb to the Soviets. They are sentenced to an execution.

David Greenglass

David Greenglass is Ethel Rosenberg’s brother.

William Douglas

William Douglas is a Supreme Court Justice. He is often accused of being a communist for an attempt to pursue a deeper investigation of the Rosenberg case.

Roy Marcus Cohn

Roy Marcus Cohn is a right-hand man of Joseph McCarthy, who has helped Irving Saypol to send the Rosenbergs to the Death House.

Joseph McCarthy

Joseph McCarthy is a senator and a happy warrior against Communism.

Betty Crocker

Betty Crocker is a daughter of General Mill.

Max Brothers

Max Brothers are comedians.

Irving Kaufman

Irving Kaufman is a judge.

Irving Saypol

Irving Saypol is a judge. He is often referred to as “the boy judge” courtesy his young age.

Bill Knowland

Bill Knowland is the Majority Leader.

Ev Dirksen

Ev Dirksen is one of Richard Nixon’s Senate classmates.

Alger Hiss

Alger Hiss is an American politician, whose career is destroyed courtesy of accusations of him being a Soviet spy.

Poet Laureate

Poet Laureate is an incarnation of the Time.
