The Princess Diaries is a fictional young adult novel written by American author Meg Cabot and was first published by HarperTrophy in 2000. The book is the first in its series, and was followed by The Princess Diaries, Volume II: Princess in the Spotlight (2001).
The book follows the coming-of-age story of the teenager, Mia Thermopolis, as she finds out she is of royal birth and is to prepare for her royal duties in order to start behaving like a princess. Throughout the course of the book, she is subjected to trials and tribulations, set by her grandmother, the Queen of Genovia.
The book has been well received with Cabot being praised by The New York Times Book Review for being a 'reigning grande dame of teenage chick lit.' Moreover, the book was adapted into film in 2001, with Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis and Julie Andrews as her grandmother. The film performed extremely well, generating $165.3 million at the box office.
