Grandpa Ponder knows that he cannot always be there to watch over Daniel and protect him from the evils of the world.

    Why does Edna Earle lookout for Uncle Daniel? Why does she not want him to testify during his trial?

    Edna Earle is the only relative that Uncle Daniel has left. He is not competent to be on his own. He always has to have others around him and she wants to make sure that those people do not take advantage of the man’s kind heart and willingness to please others. Edna Earle does not want him to testify at his trial because she knows that he will tell the truth and the truth is not beneficial to Uncle Daniel or Bonnie Dee. Uncle Daniel would never wittingly hurt anyone. Edna Earle wants to protect his innocence so that he will not become jaded by life and will always believe the best in everyone.

    Why do people stop coming to see Uncle Daniel after the trial?

    People flocked to Uncle Daniel because he was always giving things away. They wanted to see what he would do next and if they would benefit from it. At the trial, he gives away all his money. The people know that he has nothing to give anyone anymore, so they do not visit him or come to hear his stories.
