The Play of Adam (Le Jeu d'Adam) Irony

The Play of Adam (Le Jeu d'Adam) Irony

Not the obedient wife he wanted

In the story of the primordial couple, the beginning is extremely positive, with Adam expressing his happiness of being given an obedient wife to serve him and to listen to his every command. Ironically, the same wife he praised ended up being the reason he lost the idyllic and perfect life he had before he was given a wife.

Life will be better if you listen to me

Also in the first story, the Devil tries to convince the first couple that after eating from the forbidden fruit, their lives will be infinitely better and will have a status closer to that held by God. Adam and Eve fall into his trap and eat from the tree they were told to never touch. After they sinned, God banished them from Paradise and forced them to live in an inhospitable land. This turn of events is ironic because it proves that what the Devil claimed to be the truth was the biggest deception in history and because the opposite of what he promised was going to happen took place.

They were sent to help you

When the author writes about the many prophets sent by God to help the Jewish people, they are described in the beginning as saviors. Those men were supposed to help the Jewish nation return to God and as such have better lives. Thus, considering their purpose, it is ironic to see how many of those prophets sent were killed for the simple reason they were sent to help.

I do not agree with this

During the description of the lives of the prophets, the struggles they had to go through are highlighted. What is also mentioned is the fact that God did not agree with the way in which his chosen men were treated. Ironically, despite seeing the struggles the prophets had to go through, God refused to do anything to help his servants.

He does not control everything

God is described time and time again as the supreme power in-universe, an unbeatable force that everyone must obey. Considering this way of describing God, it is ironic to see every living being, from angels to humans, all decide not to listen to him and to follow their own ways.
