The Piano Essay Questions

Essay Questions

  1. 1

Why is the piano so important to Ada?

Ada is mute and hasn't spoken since she was a child. The piano for her represents a way of communicating with the world in a way that expresses exactly who she is, believes herself and others to be and frees all of her emotions to come out in ways that words cannot. Thus when Stewart does not understand this there is a distance created between them that is not recoverable.

  2. 2

Why does Baines fall in love with Ada?

Ada asks Baines to help her bring her piano back to her home from the sea shore. When they arrive at the coast Ada plays the piano and Baines is immediately transformed. The symbolism is that Ada is able to speak to Baines' soul in such a way that no one nor thing has ever done. The music has created a connection between the two that is deeper than anything Baines has ever known in his life and he is willing to carry out his desire for this connection with Ada at any cost.

  3. 3

What are the markings on Baines' face?

Baines is a man who has embraced the native New Zealand culture of the Maori people. He, unlike Stewart speaks their language, spends time with them as friends and has created lasting relationships. The markings on his face symbolize his belonging to their culture and being of the land, not imposing his own beliefs upon the Maori, but embracing them as fellow human beings.
