The Shrink with Daddy Issues
The chief psychiatrist at a private sanatorium is not just a woman, but a woman with daddy issues.
“My father…was a great man...he hated me like poison”
Useful Advice, Metaphorically Speaking
The patient calling himself Mobius passes along some useful advice that, unfortunately, most people won’t heed because they think they’ll never have to use it. But just in case:
“If you’re in a madhouse already, the only way to get rid of the past is to behave like a madman.”
Captain Bringdown
While he does offer that terrifically useful piece of advice, among the sanatorium patients with the science hall of fame names, Mobius is the wolf-man of the bunch. By which, he is something of a downer, always looking on the dark side and spouting to the negative. And, in this particular case, he really does sound Lon Chaney, Jr.’s poor, poor pitiful wolfman:
“We are wild beasts. We ought not to be let loose on humanity.”
Engineers
So, apparently, there really is this thing where physicists have a low opinion of engineers; it is not just a Sheldon Cooper thing. Newton makes the point of divergence quite clear and certain:
“…the engineers come along. They don’t care about anything except that the formulate. They treat electricity as a pimp treats a whore.”
Job Description for Genius
Downer he may be, but Mobius us a treasure trove of information. First, that stuff about how to make it through being in a madhouse. Then, near the end, he passes along some really useful information:
“…today, it’s the duty of a genius to remain unrecognized.”
