In the context of the story, Raoul’s behavior is meant to be construed as romantic: after all, he is so in love with her that he constantly asks after her whereabouts, goes to her home at Mamma Valerius’ house, and even hides in her dressing room to spy on her. However, this same behavior could also be seen as controlling and obsessive.
