Ocean Levels
Teller explains how oil contributes to a rise in the level of oceans. He explains, "Our planet will get a little warmer…But when the temperature does rise by a few degrees over the whole globe, there is a possibility that the icecaps will start melting and the level of oceans will begin to rise." The warmth of the planet arises from the continued burning of fossil fuels. The warmth makes the icecaps, which require low temperatures to remain frozen, to melt. The melting ice ends up in oceans, thus, increasing the amount of water in the oceans.
“The Great Canadian Oil Sands”: A Launch
The individuals that attended the launch of the oil sands were from America. Calgary Herald wrote, "a crowd of about 600 VIPS predicting incredible wealth would be unlocked from the massive energy source in north Alberta." The VIPs included those who represented the growing petroleum empire in the U.S. A. During the opening, they felt that the oil sand was a monumental discovery that could help their business to thrive and their wealth to expand.
Typhoon Haiyan
Joanna Sustento recounts her experience with Typhoon Haiyan. The typhoon is extremely strong that it endangers them. Remaining in the house does not guarantee them security. Joanna remembers, "As I went out of my room, the water was already chest level. We all decided to go out of the house because if not, we would be trapped inside. Exiting the house was difficult because of the water rushing outside their front door." The extraordinary intensity of the storm is directly attributed to climate change. Lots of things, including trees and houses, are destroyed by the storm. In the course of the storm, her sister-in-law suffers a snake bite. They struggle to survive a deadly storm that brings other problems.
