Bret Harte published around thirty short stories, short story collections, poetry collections, novels, and novellas; "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" is one of his most famous works. Other notable works include "The Luck of Roaring Camp," "Tennessee's Partner," and "The Tales of the Argonauts."

Later examples of Western works of fiction include the novels of Cormac McCarthy, the films of John Ford, the films of Sergio Leone, the films of Akira Kurosawa, and the films of Joel and Ethan Coen.
