Nikolai Gogol is considered by many to be one of the greatest writers in literary history. His most famous novel, Dead Souls, is considered to be one of Russia's first great novels. Gogol was also one of the first writers to use the grotesque in literature, in "The Nose," but also in "The Viy," "The Overcoat," and "Nevsky Prospekt." He has been compared, both in style and substance, to many of his contemporaries and successors, including Ivan Turgenev, Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
