The Mystic Masseur Metaphors and Similes

The Mystic Masseur Metaphors and Similes

The dusty wriggling road

The place where Ganesh and Stewart, a man who is foreseen to have a great influence on him, meet is described vibrantly. In particular, the writer’s choice and usage of a simile in the expression of the wriggling dusty road makes the imagery all the more pronounced. The wriggling of the dusty road is likened to a black snake: It happened on the dusty road that begins at Princes Town and wriggles like a black snake through the green of sugar-cane to Debe.

The crowd’s treatment of Ganesh

The writer uses a simile to bring out the treatment of Ganesh by the crowd. When the treatment of Ganesh is likened to that of a hero, the conception of the idea of his superiority, courage, and nobility is enhanced on the part of the reader. The writer notes: The crowd was beginning to treat him like a hero.

Beharry’s speech

Beharry’s behavior during his speech resorts the writer to compare him to a mouse: When Beharry spoke he became rather like a mouse. The perception of the man’s anxious nature during his speech and the way he works his mouth apprehensively up and down as if he was nibbling justifies the writer’s choice of this comparison as it enhances imagery.

The sound of Bissoon’s reading

Ganesh brings out the terrible nature of Bissoon’s reading by using a simile in which he compares the sound of the same to hell. He says: You breaking up the words and the sentences and you making the whole thing sound like hell.” The simile thus enables the reader’s conception of the unrefined nature of Bissoon’s reading skills.

Loyalty

Despite the inconsiderate treatment, Suruj Poopa’s loyalty is made evident in the way that he sticks up, even for those who do not treat him with respect. This is evident when Beharry compares how Suruj was treated to the treatment of a dog: Suruj Poopa, you ain’t have no shame. They do treat you like dog and still you sticking up for them. The treatment of Suruj like a dog brings out how inconsiderate and inhuman it was.
