The Mysterious Benedict Society Imagery

The Mysterious Benedict Society Imagery

Maze

The author uses imagery to depict a sense of suspense and tension as Reynie makes his way through the maze. The description of the "black walls" and the "darkness" create a sense of foreboding and danger as if Reynie is in a place where no one can help him, and he must find his way out. Moreover, the description of the "wiggly arrow" accentuates Reynie's uncertainty since he is being tested in a way he does not understand. The imagery of the "quick footsteps" and the "unlocked door" implies urgency, as the pencil woman waits for Reynie to find his way out. Finally, the depiction of Reynie's "flinching" highlights his fear because he is expecting something to happen that he doesn't know how to prepare for. All of these images work together to create tension that drives the narrative forward.

Enigmatic

The narrator creates an imagery of a mysterious yet friendly figure in the form of Mr. Benedict. He is described as wearing a green plaid suit and having “thick white hair” that is “shaggy and mussed”. His large nose is described as being “lumpy like a vegetable” and his face has nicks from a razor scattered across it, adding to the mysteriousness of the character. The imagery of the two women standing on either side of him, watching him with “alert expressions, as if worried what he might do” adds to the mystery and intrigue of the character. Mr. Benedict is further described as having a “friendly smile” and speaking in a polite manner adding a contrast to the peculiarity of his character. These descriptions give the reader a vivid image of an enigmatic yet friendly figure, one that is likely to be important in the plot of the story.

Sticky's Room

The description of Sticky's room depicts it as a small but comfortable room, with a worn rug on the wooden floor, bunk beds against the wall, and more bookshelves. This imagery gives off a feeling of warmth, safety, and comfort, therefore, indicating that Sticky's room is a place of refuge and security. Furthermore, it further emphasizes that Sticky is fast asleep, with his glasses still on his nose and his slippers on his feet. The presence of the thick book about tropical plant life, open to the very middle, also insinuates Sticky's intelligence and curiosity, as well as his passion for learning. Thus, the portrayal creates an emotional connection between the reader and Sticky since he is a lost, lonely boy in need of a safe place to rest and learn.

Friendship

The narrator asserts "Reynie experienced a curious mixture of admiration, affection, and sympathy - curious because although he’d known the boy for only a day, it seemed as if they’d been friends for ages." This description portrays the growing relationship between Reynie and Sticky. It conjures up the scenario of two strangers coming together and feeling as if they have known each other for much longer than they have. Thereby, speaks to the connection they share in being outcasts—Sticky is a runaway and Reynie is an orphan—and how their common experiences cause them to bond quickly. This imagery is quite poetic, as the narrator uses words such as "curious" and "seemed" to show awe and surprise at the speed of their connection.
