The Monkey's Mask Summary

The Monkey's Mask Summary

Jill Fitzpatrick is a private investigator who specializes in missing persons cases. The last time Mickey was seen was at a poetry reading at a local bar where she got in an unknown person's car. Jill must locate her, but over the course of the investigation, she gets to know Mickey's poetry teacher, Diana. They hit it off, though Diana is married. The two women sleep together.

Mickey's body is allegedly found one day, but the parents ask Jill to keep helping, unconvinced by the police's work. Diana gets caught by her husband, but surprisingly he isn't upset. Meanwhile, Jill continues her quest by infiltrating the poetry community. She meets Bill and Tony, both secret lovers of Mickey's. She finds Mickey has a penchant for the sexually extreme. In bed, Diana tries some kinky tricks herself but Jill doesn't know how she feels.

Bill believes he can help Jill with her case, but he dies in a car explosion designed to prevent him from helping. Before his death, he says that Mickey talked him into explicit writing, saying she was often pushy about sex. Jill travels to meet Tony in Brisbane where she learns about Mickey's diary, which Diana has. Diana and Tony have been having an affair, Jill learns.

At home, Jill's house has been ransacked. Evidence about Mickey is missing. Jill meets with Nick, Diana's husband, and they talk about their feelings for Diana. Jill asks him point blank, and he admits it: Diana and Nick killed Mickey together during a sex game gone wrong. Diana threatens Jill, but secretly, she taped Nick's confession and sent it to the police.
