The Mirror of Simple Souls Characters

The Mirror of Simple Souls Character List

The soul

In Porete's conception, the soul is a person (notice that the full title says "...the simple souls who are annihilated"). But, the personality of the person, the will and desires that make a person behave in certain idiosyncratic ways, these are annihilated from the soul, according to this book. The soul is reunited with God in a mystic, transcendental way, after the soul has been purged seven times of its imperfection.

God

God is the creator of the world in Porete's writing. God is both a symbol and a person to this writing, like all the characters in fact, and when Love and Reason debate about the nature of God, this is a perplexing mystery because those are supposedly both perfect aspects of God's divinity, and still they postulate and theorize. God is demonstrated in the full weight of unknowability, so that the human experience of God is an experience of chaos in a way, one that removes evil from the soul, almost like a sandblaster cleans debris from a metal surface.

Love

Love is personified in this book, and Love is the authority on God's nature. Throughout the book, Love seeks to explain unknowable things to Reason who struggles to accept them, not understanding the paradoxical nature of Love's insights. Love explains that the soul is inevitably purged of its selfishness, its pride, its urge to fulfill desire, and that such a transformation happens in ways that are not knowable through reason.

Reason

Reason wants a clear explanation for why Porete's Love is so avidly sure about something that isn't really provable or logical. Reason explains that part of God's nature is systems, orders, and hierarchies, and he wants Love to use those structures and constructs to help communicate with Reason what the ineffable mysteries of Divine Love really are, but in the end, Reason is unable to deduce these things through logic alone.
