Adversity sets apart individuals who are resilient from those who are not. In The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline resilience is explored physically, emotionally and culturally through the lives of multiple Indigenous characters who face adversity and are on the run for their lives. The protagonist Frenchies' physical resilience is evident in his actions in his need to protect his new family. Further, he demonstrates emotional resilience by remaining strong and focusing on his end goal despite seeing the horror of many people dying in front of him. Finally, Frenchie’s cultural resilience is seen throughout the text as he learns more about the plight of his people due to colonialism and the recruiters. Despite challenges the characters confront, their unwavering physical, emotional, and cultural resilience emerges through adversity, allowing them to survive, and thrive.
