Necromancy

Oliver Haddo, the magician who is seeking to exact revenge on Arthur, is truly planning to use Margaret as part of his magic practice. When Arthur goes to the village of Venning, he learns that Margaret has been murdered and her life was sacrificed for the creation of evil creatures hiding in Haddo’s attic.

Love

Love is shown through many relationships in this story, but most predominately through the relationship between Margaret and Arthur. The two are deeply in love but their relationship is destroyed by the magic Haddo places on her which results in her being entrapped and unable to leave him. However, Arthur continues to love her and seeks her out when he believes she is in danger.

Revenge

Margaret is the unwilling victim of Haddo and Arthur’s conflict, and is eventual, a sacrifice of their contest. Haddo steals her from Arthur after he dispels his magic, which results in Margaret being trapped in a loveless marriage with Haddo. Eventually, Haddo gets his revenge on Arthur by killing and sacrificing Margaret.
