Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888, though he spent the early years of his life in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Around the age of 12, Raymond's father, Maurice Benjamin Chandler, an alcoholic railway engineer, abandoned the family. In order to ensure her son had the best possible education, Chandler's mother, Florence, moved them to London. There, they lived with Florence's mother and received financial support from her brother.
