Describe the atmosphere/tone of the poem.
Students should notice that this poem is quite mysterious and spooky. Discuss how this tone is created by looking at setting, language and word choice, as well as literary technique. For example, students may note the isolated and gloomy setting (a seemingly abandoned house, deep in the woods on a dark night), the ambiguity of the language used (i.e., neither the Traveler nor the Listeners have names beyond what they do; the bargain the Traveller is fulfilling is unknown), and the ghostly qualities of the Listeners and/or the house.
