The Last Thing He Told Me

The Last Thing He Told Me Analysis

The Last Thing He Told Me is author Laura Dave's sixth and most popular novel. Released in 2021, the Dave's novel tells the story of a man called Owen, who mysteriously abandons his new wife and his daughter one day. Perplexed, Owen's family feverishly search for him but are left with more questions than answers. For example: who really is Owen?

The basis for the book that became The Last Thing He Told Me arose from Laura Dave's interest in true crime, particularly fraud and embezzlement cases. The inspiration for the novel also came from an unexpected place: the Enron scandal. Dave was interested in how the wife of Enron's CEO believed wholeheartedly in the innocence of her husband. But Dave didn't start writing until nearly a decade after the scandal and interview occurred.

In the writing the novel, Dave wanted to ensure that she didn't rely on typical thriller/mystery novel cliches to tell her story. She wanted, in other words, to deliver a wholly unique and riveting book. The book received glowing reviews, so it is safe to say that she achieved her goal - so much so that Dave is very open to writing a sequel to the novel.
