The Laramie Project Imagery

A good place to live in

From the interviews conducted in the beginning, the inhabitants of the town let it be understood that Laramie is a good place to live in. The town is portrayed as being an idyllic place, a place where nothing bad could ever happen and a place where everyone were as safe as they could be. Even after Matthew’s death, the people who liked in Laramie still refused to change their perspective about the town, proving thus just how attached they were to the town.

Buffalo

The theater company from New York that went to Laramie to investigate Matthew’s death were impressed when they saw a heard of buffalo on the fields. The image if the heard impresses the theater company because they did not had until that day the opportunity to see such a thing. The image is also important because it points towards the idea that the people living in Laramie were living in a rural area, a place subjected to old rules and customs and thus they were less inclined to adapt to a new way of living and less inclined to accept those who lived a life they considered as being wrong.

Confident man

Another important image is the way Matthew is described by those who knew him after he stayed a while in Laramie and who had a completely different experience than Matt’s counselor when he first arrived. For them, Matt was a confident man, who knew what he wanted to do with his life and who knew what type of person he wanted to become. This latter image is the complete opposite of the way Matt was described in the beginning and it shows just how much Matt changed and developed.
