The Land of Little Rain Background

Written by prominent United States author Mary Hunter Austin, The Land of Little Rain is a novel published in 1903. The book is essentially a compilation of a series of essays lyrically exploring the various aspects of the American Southwest.

The Land of Little Rain is a collection of essays about humans and animals in the American Southwest. Austin emphasizes the significance of preserving nature in all its beauty, as well as preserving the cultural tone of the Southwest in general. Some of the essays include "Water Trails of the Ceriso", where Austin describes the ability of wild animals to travel towards places with water, and "The Pocket Hunter", where Austin talks about miners, who she believes are fiercely interconnected with nature through their work.

The novel has received considerable critical attention for its lyrical tone and profound messages. It was also notably adapted into an episode of the PBS TV show American Playhouse in 1989.
